my story

If you’re expecting a totally normal, linear, traditional career path story, you’re in the wrong place.

The first thing to know about me happened before I was even born - I come from a long line of Pittsburgh people. Both sides: Pittsburgh people. This can mean a lot of things - yes, there’s only one team, and it’s the Steelers; but, also I grew up in a culture of real and honest people who work really hard and will make you feel at home immediately - probably with potatoes, pasta, and recipes that require a lot of butter. I come from steelworkers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and a grandmother who graduated with her MBA in the early 1940s.

Growing up I was always surrounded by thinkers, teachers, people of faith - as well as a lot of sales guys, Zig Ziglar fans, businessmen. There was always cross-pollination between artistry and business in my purview.

Fast forward to my college days, I stumbled into one of the country’s leading English and writing schools - Kenyon College - and refined my voice when I received feedback from a political science professor who said, my writing style was a good imitation of a bad writing style that went out sometime in the late 1930s. (Direct quote.) I didn’t realize that was a thing, but - after that - I retired from bullshit writing, and I started to write with the voice in my head. It crafted a style that’s conversational and warm; honest and authentic.

In the summer of 2011 I decided to attend graduate school; that summer, I carted GRE books around the country as friends started to get married; I started at Wake Forest University’s MBA program in the fall - and it was a disaster. I was out of my element in Accounting and Statistics; I psyched myself out because I was one of the only people who didn’t work at a bank. Then I realized, I had an edge, all of the bankers were trying to sell their ideas through spreadsheets. We can’t sell an idea with spreadsheets - we sell with stories, something I knew a lot about as both an English major, English teacher, thinker, and writer. I had already tossed my bullshit writing back in undergrad and could see where authenticity in communications was needed in business.

toth shop started unofficially right after I graduated with my MBA - knowing there was an opportunity to help people and businesses think, write, and bring both to the world.

Since founding toth shop, I’ve helped thousands of people transform millions of ideas into stories. I co-authored five children’s books; I’ve taught classes at schools like Queens University of Charlotte and Davidson College; I’ve traveled to Vienna to accept thinking and writing awards.

Every experience has counted; it’s all become part of my story. I’d love to become a part of yours. Contact me to set up a consultation to discuss how I can nix the BS from your story.

With Love,

Meg
